The mainland of Udu is Nigeria. Traditionally clay jugs were used to carry water, store food. With the creation of a second hole, the musical aspect of this vessel was discovered. Udu used to be played in rituals and ceremonies. It is made of clay and is fired in a kiln. This instrument has a distinctive sound and is commonly played by striking the body with fingers and hitting the side hole with palm.
