Born in a musician family in Istanbul, Hakan started his music life at his early ages and he met the rhythms of rich multi-cultural Anatolian Folk Music tradition.
He had his first rhythm and percussion trainings from İzzet Kızıl and Şenol Cümbüşlü. When he was 16, he studied Indian rhythms and Tabla with Ran Kumar Mishra in Varanasi India. Under the musical and spiritual impression of this training in India, he had the unique opportunity of observing musical techniques and perspectives of different cultures and synthesizing the complementary cultures of Turkey and India.
For long years he has been performing with prominent musicians and teaching the rhythms and Turkish split hand technique on Darbuka, Riq, Frame Drum, Def to students from all around the world in his Rhythm Atelier in Istanbul and through the international workshops.
Hakan Kaya has been the first Turkish percussionist who has released an instructional darbuka DVD in 2013.
Sonika Percussion extended their works to building a rhythm atelier together with Hakan Kaya in Istanbul, Turkey and created a rich series of online darbuka courses named LEARN DARBUKA including darbuka exercises, daily practices, rolling & tremolo tactics, the most popular rhythms, patterns, grooves and ornaments.
This series of online courses is a further extension of Sonika’s dream of reaching out to more people all around the world who share the rhythm passion, look for ways to start playing darbuka or to improve their advanced techniques. Learn Darbuka courses are led by Hakan Kaya.
